Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision (SOE): Performing routine preventive maintenance and repair on a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles such as, bulldozers, road graders, front-end loaders, backhoes and similar heavy construction and earth moving equipment; referring to sketches, technical manuals, diagrams, and manufacturer's publications to complete work assignments; inspecting equipment to detect damage, pressure leaks, cleaning, corrective voltage, etc.; using electrical/electronic and mechanical equipment to inspect and repair equipment (e.g., ohmmeters, dial indicators, calipers, welder/solder devices, etc.).

Pre-Employment Physical: Required
Physical Effort: Maintenance Mechanics work in tiring and uncomfortable positions requiring frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Often works on top and under vehicles in cramped positions; performs strenuous work. Frequently lifts and carries items weighting 40 to 50 pounds or more and often must push, pull, turn and position parts, assemblies, equipment and tools. Often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of others and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes.
The DLA drug testing panel tests for the following substances: marijuana, cocaine, opiates, heroin, phencyclidine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, fentanyl, norfentanyl, methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), and opioids.
Selective Service Requirement: Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.
Working Conditions: The Maintenance mechanic works both inside and outside and is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures and noise. He may sometimes work in areas where exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes and from hard damp floors and ground. Frequently is exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritation from acids, fluids, and lubricants. Mechanic typically works on parts and systems that are dirty, oily or greasy. At times the mechanic may be required to use protective safety devices which may be uncomfortable if used for extended periods of time. Occasionally required to work in inclement weather conditions including high winds, rain, snow and freezing temperatures.
